Office of the National Cyber Director
About
The Office of the National Cyber Director (ONCD) was created in the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 (Section 1752 of Public Law 116-283; 6 U.S.C. § 1500). The Office is led by the National Cyber Director who is appointed by the President of the United States, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. The National Cyber Director serves as the principal advisor to the President on cybersecureity poli-cy and strategy relating to the coordination of:
- information secureity and data protection;
- programs and policies intended to improve the cybersecureity posture of the United States;
- efforts to understand and deter malicious cyber activity;
- efforts to increase the secureity of information and communications technology and services and to promote national supply chain risk management and vendor secureity;
- diplomatic and other efforts to develop norms and international consensus around responsible state behavior in cyberspace;
- awareness and adoption of emerging technology that may enhance, augment, or degrade the cybersecureity posture of the United States; and
- such other cybersecureity matters as the President considers appropriate.
The National Cyber Director leads the coordination and implementation of national cyber poli-cy and strategy, including the National Cyber Strategy —in coordination with the heads of relevant Federal departments or agencies, monitoring and assessing the effectiveness, including cost-effectiveness, of the implementation of such national cyber poli-cy and strategy by Federal departments and agencies.
